|
|
So I'm trying to get DarkXL up and running and have had a terrible time. There seems to be a graphics card issue. Screen shots posted here:

As you can see, the screen is not completely refreshing. Artifacts are staying until that portion of the screen is redrawn.
Now I have to disclose my secret. I'm running XP in virtualization via VMware fusion on a Mac. I know I know. But I'm desperate. I would love to experience Dark Forces in a higher res.
So I guess my question is, if this were happening on a normal windows box, are there any suggestions to fix it? Please understand I've never used windows.
Thanks for any advice.[/img]

Truth be told, I'm amazed it runs at all. As far as I know, virtual machines usually don't support all the features found on high-end graphics cards. Your best bet is probably to use Boot Camp so that you can enable dual boot and install Windows XP as a secondary operating system. That way, both the Mac OS and Windows can reside on the same computer and have direct access to the hardware.
I have a Windows 7 machine with an XP virtual machine on it that I can test with. I realize that's not what you have, but if I have the same problems in the XP virtual machine, then you can be sure that a virtual OS isn't the way to go.

I'm sorry to say that if you're running a virtual machine then I can't really give any support. However Bootcamp should work fine. In addition, after Beta is released, I am planning on releasing native Mac and Linux clients for DarkXL.
Out of curiosity, are there any views that do look correct, or do the walls always fail to render?

Hi Lucius,
Thanks for the response. I'm in the process of insalling bootcamp now. I've posted a video of what it looks like in virtualization. Here:

I tried to get across in the video that when I'm right up on one wall or focused only on the floor, things are fine. But as soon as more than maybe 2 textures are visable things fall apart.
Thanks so much for what you are doing! I can't wait til the mac version is up.

Just for fun I tried to put DarkXL inside a Cider wrapper taken from another game. Unsurprisingly, it didn't work at all. But if there's going to be Mac client, it doesn't need to!

Trying to get it to run under bootcamp. Still unsuccessful on a Mac. Since it crashes now right on launch I'm thinking it has something to do with my original disc image. Working on it.

If you're running it through Bootcamp, the only thing I can think of is the graphics drivers. I do the same thing on my iMac and got it to run right from the get-go. What kind of mac are you running/age/graphics card etc?

Being a life long mac user, I only own the Mac DF disc. So I've had to "acquire" an iso image. Oddly, the iso disc image (after being burned to actual disc) goes through the DOS install and DarkXL was recognizing the install in virtualization but now that I've moved to Bootcamp, I can't get DarkXL to actually launch without immeadiately crashing. I assume it's the questionable install disc I'm using.
When I moung the iso image is shows as "GAME104". Any ideas beyond buying another copy of Dark Forces online?

questions:
1. Do I need to leave the CD in or can I remove it?
2. Do both the DARK folder on the C: drive and the DarkXL folder need to be in the same directory (folder) on the drive?

after about an hour on irc, lucius was able to help me out. I can't say enough great things about him. I'm running a mac in bootcamp and he took the time to help me out. Turns out it was a location placement issue in Windows. Now I have it worked out. Thanks to all who've been so helpful. Now I have to kill stormtroopers.
