Just got DSL for the computer! Ah, to be free of the shackles of a 56k line.

I am getting a cable connection soon because when I got a second line for my 56k, all they did was split the line in half so the fastest speed I can get at the moment is 28k! And also ADSL doesnt work on a split line either. Damn. But they said I should be able to get cable on a split line so im going to give that a try.

Uh, why wait? ADSL is terribly slow, and the other xDSL connections aren't much better either.

Somebody's been spoiled by too much technology. That's the downside of living on the cutting edge of technology. People like that exacerbate me.
The thing is, we talk about speeds and stuff, but once you get up there, there comes a point when there's not much utility gained in getting much faster, at least not for personal users at home. I mean, how big can files that you're likely to be downloading get? It's like the explosion in hard drive space. Sure, 200 GB of space looks cool, but what are you going to put in there? Movies? Why would you have movies on your computer? That's what DVDs are for.
As for me and my house, 56K will do nicely. We'll upgrade someday later. We're sticking with Win98, my 450MHz P3 AOL service for the time being.

I didn't say they were bad. I can think of two good things about them: A) they don't block the phone line, and B) they don't cost per every minute you use them. But no one can claim they are fast.

At least in the US, along with other highly-capitalistic countries (such as Canada and the UK), ADSL can be a good bargain. While it is by no means incredibly fast, it can still provide decent download speeds of several hundred kbps, and can, if you look well enough, be gotten for less than what most standard ISPS charge for dial-up: <$20US/month.
The more potent lines, such as the ones Mattias is mentioning, are hoarded greedily in the US, and only Universities and good-sized corporations can afford the lease on them, which can be up to as much as $50,000US per month.

I know that my university conveniently offers DSL to students (Well, it's THROUGH the university, not from), and I think that my family might discard the ol' 56k line...

That's nice. Here, the universities offer direct connections to the university backbone... unfortunately, though fast in theory, in practice they're usually a lot slower than the commercial options.

Well, if I actually go on campus, any of the availible terminals can get me a random ammount of bandwidth. I've gotten up to around 4Mbps from a single computer. Of course, my university offers free conections to students who live off-campus (like me), but of course, by the time it hits the traditional modem, the speed is cut down to the maximum of 52Kbps.
Of course, I don't watch that many movies, so I don't need the ability to downlaod DVD images. The speed I get (on campus) is fine enough for me now... I managed to download the 187MB JA demo in what... roughly 6 minutes? It's not as good as I'd hoped it would be, though... But it's nice to see the concussion rifle again, although it keeps reminding me of the AMSD shock rifle...
