Grrrr.. I got rid of those horrible pop-ups by a very good pop up blocker. The worst thing about those pop-ups was when you try and close some of them more would open.
But now there is another type of ad, the "overlay" ad. It just appears, and acts like a cover blocking out what you are trying to see on on PC. And once, it changed my home page. I hate them. Not that I would like anything bad to happen to the people who send them.
Does anyone know how to get rid of these, what software is available?
Also, a related question: I have an old PC with W95 OSR2. If the software says only W98 and up, what are the chances it will work on my PC? I talked to someone who said it probalby would, but if something went wrong I would not be able to get support. Thanks.

I strongly recommend Mozilla. 1.5 is good, 1.6 beta is out.

Your problems are caused by having Flash installed, and an insufficiently-restrictive security policy.

Uninstall Flash :-)
Oh wait, that's an animated GIF. Mozilla has a radio button: animate as many times as image specifies, animate once, never animate.

I think it may not.

Can you please tel me what Flash is, and how to uninstall it?
Also, if this Mozilla is worth looking at, can I have the URL so I can go there? Thanks.

I've never encountered the "overlay" ad. My Panicware Pop-Up Stopper does fine blocking most and all ads, but where did you meet this new monster?

First, I'm interested in something to work with my IE 5.5 - I just looked up the Mozilla and it's a Netscape like thingy.
As for what the overlay ad is, well even when I open my home page msn.com sometimes a rectangular block, like a cover sheet, just appears and the ad blocks what is underneath. When you scroll, it moves too! I hate it.
On other sites, it can be really nasty. Like I went to a message board about a movie star, and the rectangular block appears in what can I say - a more violent form. It once changed my home page!
I think this is the "wave of the future" now that so many people have pop-up blockers(my pop-up blocker works fine).

Well, I've seen about 20 "hover" ads today... It's like it is the latest advertising craze (which it probably is). I personally think that they should be outlawed... I don't think that they really constitue "free speech", considering they're automated.
And as far as browsers go, IE will probably never have perfect security from outside sources; those "scum of the Internet" find/make holes in IE as fast as Microsoft can plug them.

Usually, these "hover" ads seem to be in Flash, and contain a "close" button. They're still annoying. I don't think IE comes with an option to disable Flash, but I think it should, or at least the Flash plugin should be disableable. I go to CNN's website daily, and their front page has one of those, and it's truly annoying.

Sheldon, I have to ask, where do you come up with these crazy smilies. I had to laugh when I saw this one. I hope things are going better for you.

Hi JJ. Yeah, the object was to laugh. The smiley is a bit crazy, but it does provide a diversion.
If you are interested, I can supply the web site where I got it.

I know of this ad. Whats really annoying is that it only appears if I have popups disabled. I have to enable popups to get it to go away, but then it appears as a popup instread.
