It's been years since I looked at the Dark Forge code, but if you guys want to send me bug reports on it, please note that my e-mail address is now bradman@pobox.com instead of whatever was in the Dark Forge documentation. (I probably won't check this forum with any frequency so e-mail is the best way to get bug reports to me regarding Dark Forge.)

How many people still edit Dark Forces levels on the Mac?

Alrighty, I did some digging and found the source code for Dark Forge. Only one snag - it's from version 1.0, and it looks like I actually went as high as 1.2. D'oh! It looks like the release notes give me some pretty strong clues as to what I fixed, post-1.0, so it's not that big a loss, I guess.

So anyway, I started work on carbonizing Dark Forge today, and I've made some decent progress. The code is an absolute mess, but I'm getting it cleaned up and putting in comments where I can. Once that's all done, I'll release it and put the source code out there for folks to tinker with. Send me bug reports on the existing 1.2 app (bradman@pobox.com) and I'll try to get those fixed as well.

Now I wish I knew how to write code! I would love to mess around with Dark Forge!

It may be a blessing for you that you don't know how to code. The Dark Forge code is nasty - it's a showcase of how not to write code. I find myself fighting back the urge to totally gut it and do it right, now that I'm much more familiar with Mac programming than I was in 1996.

Ohh, Brad, one thing I noticed, is that when levels start getting bigger, when I make a few edits the screen goes grey, no bigt problem as I can save it and restart Dark Forge, but on big levels it takes a while to load and it slows progress down. It is a great program and I enjoy using it, though if you were going to update it this and several other bugs I have noticed would be greatly appreciated if you could fix them.

Do you have it drawing other levels? They typically show up in the window as large gray polygons. I'm not sure I really understand what the bug is though. Do you edit something, the map goes gray and you can't see anything else unless you quit and restart the app?
