:: Waits impatiently for Scape Goat to post my level ::
Knowing this is the first level released in a while, you'd think he would be on top of it.

Was it necessary to make us wait? I'd still be just as ecxited if I read about a new DF level that I could play immediately.

Scape Goat, you still very much have the honor of posting the good news on the front page! As for me, well, I've got a term paper to get back to.
Enjoy! (I, for one certainly did -- I played through most of it already. Nice work!)

And there you have it. James Milne's (me) first level has made it to DF-21!
I hope you guys enjoy this. I put in a lot of effort to please everyone. It's no Dark Tide, but hopefully it will do for now .

I've been busy and didn't get a chance to check in over the weekend...
I was going to give this a 3 star rating, but that seemed kind of low compared to previous ratings that were given out. Four stars seems more consistent.

Just remember that this isn't the final version. This is just a teaser level and it will be worked on more as the series comes to completion. It is also short because the series will not be separate GOBs. It will be one like the DF96 project. But it's cool that it got 4 stars, I wasn't expecting anything higher than that.

Very nice level, short it was, yes, but I loved the outdoor areas. rarely do I see something in Dark Forces that I look at and think, Wow, thats beautiful! But the colors all came together very well and look great. One comment I had was maybe use different hights with the trees. The canyons had a nice feel to them as they didn't feel liner, but they were simple enough to follow (unlike the Ice2 level)
The base was simple and followed the look of about a thousand other imperial bases, yet yours still looked good. I found myself thinking that it looked LucasArt Caliber.
overall, though it was short, this level was really good and I can't wait for the rest of the series.
Also, this level inspired me to open up Dark Forge and start editing again, I have a cool idea and I am now off.

Yes, I agree that this is excelent work, and hope to see yet more improvement as you go on, BG. With some more touching-up and detail, it could easily snag a 5-star rating.

Yeah, I'll probably expand the basement and change the interior of the cave a little. I'll probably extend it a little bit as well. I'll also add a little more detail to the small elevator room and fix some texturing errors. And instead of having the bluesky, I'll probably change it to a late afternoon kind of sky, because I noticed that it didn't work very well, but it added more color to the level so I left it in. I'll also refine the laser screen room to make it a little more difficult.
Wow... there's a lot to be worked on...

I personally dont think it was a Jaw-dropping or Awe-inspiring level, but that's just because I've been spoiled by Dark Tide and the Such. I agree that the outdoor areas were beautiful (Now I have to work extra hard on the exterior of my level). The Imperial Base was well textured and layed out. Nice touch using the vestibul from the Secret Base.
While its nothing overly spectacular, I'd rate it 4 stars. 5 stars if the series is of this level (or better). Good Job Gundam!!
Must... make... better... level...

A solid debut release, good stuff! The outdoor architecture is as good as any I've seen. The base was nicely laid out too, quite believable. Really good to play a new level and to my rusty fingers the Hard setting was perfectly balanced.
Keep it up!

A new level?!?!? Amazing
Wish I could play it, but my uber-awesome comp can't play DF, so I have to wait till I get my old "DF tank" back up to give my opinion. Can't wait to try it though!

In my opinion, quite a good level, especially keeping in mind that's James' first release.
I agree with the most - the outdoor areas are well done, look quite good and despite nice vegetation it's good that they don't make a too-sweet feel like "Alice in Wonderland".
Although nothing unseen yet, I find the base layout just OK. Interior architecture looks fine, detailed enough but not to look like a bazaar. A few extra textures (screens&controls) fit well. Enemy placement was just right - no swarms of enemies, but all logically and cleverly placed.
No noticeable HOMing, but I noticed a little elevator texture scrolling bug, that's anyway no sin unless you're really picky. Lighting set is OK.
I guess the level could use more extra components, but I must admit that James managed to do quite a good thing even with using mostly the original LucasArts stuff.
Generally, a sweet little atmospheric and finely laid-out level that still has room to improve, but it has its strong points, like the outdoor area.

I finally got around to playing this level. After so many compliments from the gang here I figured I should have a look and since it was made with a Mac user's involvement I had to look.
This is really a good level. Not too flashy, but decent gameplay and enough custom art to pull off a new environment. These days, I can't maintain interest in a level unless there is enough new art to convince me that Kyle has traveled to a new place in the Star Wars galaxy. James' use of new textures in the exteriors defintitely pulled that off. The cypress-like trees went a long ways in that regard. The old stone tablets in the interior base seemed quite authentic, and gave me a warm and fuzzy narrative feel to the story. The Imperial entrance was perfectly placed, and the guard towers and high-walled area showed a great competency in understanding DF sector limitations. I kept waiting for a HOM effect, but thankfully found none.
My only criticisms involve the Imperial base interior. The design of the rooms and hallways was nice, which is important since the Empire uses a prefab-style with all greys and blues, so a distinct and recognizable design for each area is a must and this was found throughout. The only problem I found was that the scale of the base seemed a little on the small side, corridors felt cramped and it led to easy firefights, and in the end it felt like the Empire was on a budget when they built the base. Go back and play some good Imperial base levels from DF like Detention or Test Base. You will find more room to move around and enjoy combat. Good level design comes from strong visuals and good gameplay.
My final impression of the level is quite deserving of 4 stars. Many commented on the length of the level, claiming it to be on the short side. DF levels in my opinion are better short and really sweet. A great job! Congratulations James.

I thought it was a great leangth, I love Dark Tide 1, but I liked the length of 2 better.
This level reminded me of The Mystery of the Morning Wood, Which in my opinion is the best named level in Dark Forced History!

Thanks, Patrick. Hearing that from a senior editor like you means a lot to me
And thank you all for your compliments and suggestions and I promise that the Jedi Crystal will pretty damn sweet once it's finished.

I first played that level soon after I bought DF, in the era of Jedi Visions and Bespin: The Cloud City. And now, I have water up my nose.

Just to be clear, that was water I was trying to drink, but couldn't because I was laughing.
And it was a Beavis and Butthead joke: how embarassing. But I wasn't expecting it at all.
