|
|
1) Hey! What's this "Screenshot of the Week" (SotW) business all about?
For one thing, it's not actually a business (or, for that matter, a non-profit organization); rather, the SotW is just a friendly competition between the authors here at DF-21.
2) Who is eligible?
Anyone with a Dark Forces-related screenshot of their own creation (i.e. you can't take a picture of a Hall of Fame mission and claim it as your own) is eligible and may enter however many times he (or she) pleases.
3) When does the SotW week start?
The schedule is as follows:
Wednesday through Tuesday night
If you have any screens, start a new topic here in the showcase forum and post away! (alternately, send them to me at jackson@df-21.net.)
(The next) Wednesday through Thursday morning
For these 24 hours or so, we'll have a showcase forum poll in which all registered forumgoers may vote for their favorite screen(s).
Thursday morning
The winner of the previous day's poll appears on the "Screenshot of the Week" spot on the front page of DF-21.net.
This schedule is subject to change. (SEE ALSO: "What if there aren't any screens for a whole week??")
4) What can I enter?
You may enter a screenshot of anything you've made that's Dark Forces-related... generally, authors enter screens of missions or demo levels, but you're also more than welcome to submit images of your latest BM* WAX, FME or 3DO. Heck, if you want, you could even enter a picture of the interface from any Dark Forces editors you might be constructing!
*That's a Dark Forces BM, to any smart alecs who were wondering.
5) ...and how do I enter?
There are two ways to enter:
1) You could post your screenshots, as I mentioned before, in a new topic here in the showcase forum.
2) You might rather your screenshots be surprises and have them debut on the poll. In this case, just email them to me (jackson@df-21.net) and I'll hold onto them until the next vote.
6) How do I take screenshots?
Nottheking wrote:
PC DF cannot exceed a rendering resolution of 320x200. To find that that is what you're getting, run DF with a command like this:
DARK.exe -shots
Then, use the F12 key to take a screenshot. Open it up in MSPaint (or something aside from a photo viewer/editor), and check the image.
(Quote originally appeared here.)
NOTE: If F12 doesn't do the trick, the Delete key might; the right button to press for screenshots seems to vary from computer to computer. Additionally, you could always give Print Screen a go!
Mac users should try Snapz (from TheDarkTide.com), which allows for high resolution 640x400 screenshots.
7) Where do I upload my screens?
(If you plan on emailing me your screens personally, you won't have to worry about this one. However, if you're going to post screens on the forum, you'll want to read this.)
If you have your own webspace, you're more than welcome to link from there. Otherwise, I'd suggest you try photobucket.com, an excellent image hosting service. DF-21 has an account there, set up personally by Casey Neumiller:
photobucket.com/albums/v498/DF-21/
You're more than welcome to use the DF-21 account; just private message ([img=http://forums.df-21.net/templates/subSilver/images/lang_english/icon_pm.gif]) either Casey or myself for login information.
8 ) And how do I post my screenshots, anyway?
Simple! If you have a file at http://www.wherever.com/images/sample1.jpg... you'd type in the following: | Code: | | [img=http://www.wherever.com/images/sample1.jpg] |
How will you know which screenshot is mine? What if you can't tell what it's of?!
Well, I'm glad you asked! To keep everything in order, we ask that you supply your name, the name of the project in which you took the screenshot, and (optionally) a description of the picture (i.e. what's going on, where we are, et cetera). Make certain to include this information, ESPECIALLY if you're emailing your screens to me!
If you can, please also use the naming convention of PROJECTNAME-INITIALS-NUMBER. For instance, Casey Neumiller's first picture of his project called "Kashyyyk" would be named Kashyyyk-CN-01.
9) What if there aren't any screens for a whole week??
We blame JorBo.
Or, simply enough, we just wait another week.
9A) And what if there's a tie in the poll?!
We'll just have more than one screen of the week, then!
10) And what if I don't want to be a part of the SotW?
That's quite alright! When you post your screens on the showcase forum, just say that they are "just for show" (and not for inclusion in the SotW poll).
That should just about wrap it up... if there's anything here that you don't think is fit, post a response -- sure there's ten of them, but that doesn't make them commandments!

Yeah. Windows users press the Delete key to take a shot, not F12.

Wow... I didn't notice this topic had been replied to until just now. Sheeshkabob.
Anywho, I've fixed the FAQ so 1) it mentions that you should press delete to take shots, and 2) the "but what if there aren't enough shots for a poll?!?!" is considerably shorter.

Two suggestions:
1. If there aren't any screens that week, carry over the second-placed screen from the previous week.
2. Put a date on the homepage shot so people can see that this really is happening every week.
3. (I know, I said two) How about in the event of a tie, the votes of people who've actually bothered to write something about their favourite shot count extra? Just a thought. It may be that the other tied shot(s) get their exposure later on anyway (a la suggestion 1).
Great feature though - one extra straw on my "I Refuse To Use WDFUSE" camel's back. Keep them coming and you'll break him...
