Hi ACE here,I'm kind of newb at editing. Ive probably been editing for maby 6 or 7 months. But one question still gets me,what is the best level editor for Dark Forces? Im using wedit because its easy to use. But is there somthing better? I NEED TO KNOW!

General census says WDFUSE is better, but it's up to personal opinion. WDFUSE is more robust than WEDIT, and there's a few other comparisons (WDFUSE doesn't have the "ingame view" mode for one, just a simple wall rendering)
Then again, I'm not the most educated on this topic.

I remember also reading that Wedit can't automatically align wall textures, as Wdfuse can.

Ah yes, winfuse I tried it once but didnt like it as much as wedit. Only one thing though I understood everything in wedit except INF definitions how do those work?

Wouldn't know about inf in wedit, sorry.
I tried wedit first, but then I gave wdfuse a shot, ran through the tutorial (in the help files) and never looked back.
Once you get into the rhythm in wdfuse it's a lot more powerful and you can build very quickly.
Been a while for me though.

Ok thanks, I'll retry winfuse and go through the help files.Besides im are planning to make a level unlike all those serious levels, my level will have nothing to do with the star wars saga. Its going to be more realistic.

CDark by Mattias Welander was better than either. Pity he never released it. I have a copy of a beta on a disc somewhere. I wonder would he mind if I uploaded it. For posterity's sake like.

I agree. I have a copy as well. I have been
tempted to post it just to see how long it takes Mattias to pop out of the woodwork.

IF you can, can you please get permission to upload CDark? Thanks.

Oh I wasn't thinking of asking permission, I just wanted to upload it to see if Mattias would come running, or if he was hidden away for good. I'll have to see if I can find CDark. If I do find it, I'll put up a DL link.

I'll have a look as well. It had some great features, and it'd be good to see Mattias again.

CDARK is different from WDFUSE in that distribution of WDFUSE doesn't result in the Swedish Death Penalty.
There was a bunch of things that made CDARK better, I just can't remember them. It's been a while since Mattias Welander has been around. The biggest blessing for DF editing would be an undo button...

Ok, the whole reason im on a hunt for the best level editor for dark forces is that i have run into a few graphic problems. 1. if i make a big room (which is requierd for my curent level) all the textures get choped up visualy. 2. every time i move the gun is choped up and diplayed all over the screen. 3. if i fire a shot it will duplicate itself visualy across the screen. Now is this the editor or the game?

Yeah, a different editor won't fix your HoM problems. It's a game engine limitation. You pretty much have to scale back your design or find some clever solution.

I've read that you can get long viewing distances by using 3DO geometry for the distant areas instead of LEV. "Rebel Intelligence III-Taloraan: Battle in the Sky" at http://df-21.net/downloads/demos.html may have an example.

Yeah just keep in mind building 3dos sucks. There's not really any good tools for it, at least not nearly as good as Jedi Knight (JED has built in 3DO creation support).

I made a large part of DTIII in the CDark Alpha. It has its problems, but the instant level preview with lighting and texturing is extremely helpful for fine detail. Its true though, its tricky if not impossible to swap your LEV files out to WDFUSE or Dark Forge and back again. CDark creates some unknown inconsistency in the file format.

I'm pretty sure that "unknown inconsistency" was CDark uppercasing the sector names and WDFUSE using case-sensitive sector and INF names, which meant if any of your sectors with INF had lowercase names WDFUSE wouldn't be able to find the INF.
I suppose it would be better if you made a new level instead of importing an existing one with INF and used all upper-case names.

well i havent got to Infs yet because I WAS building the basics of my level. But I then had to scrap the project because the game engine couldnt handle what I was planning to put in. In addition I also scraped it because the room needed to be massive. So now i'm thinking of an idea for a level I would like to do.
